The New Republic was established shortly after the Emperors death in late 4 or early 5 ABY, by the members of the Rebel Alliance who saw the empire splintering without the Emperors control over it. They made an attempt to restore the ideals and times of the Old Republic during its Golden Age, and though it has failed in become the New Old Republic, it is still a symbol of Freedom to choose and a right to govern ones self.
The Uprisings
Even as the flames cooled from the
Clone Wars and the Emperor was still adjusting himself to his throne, many beings within the newly formed Empire were already plotting rebellion. Though the
Galactic Civil War wouldn't officially begin until the Battle of Yavin, senators like Mon Mothma, Bail Organna, and Garm Bel Iblis were fighting against Palpatine, at first in the Imperial Senate, believing that government could still stop the emperor. Outside of the senate, conscientious citizens who already felt the loss of freedoms and saw the evils that would arise from the emperors new views, such as alien enslavement, already began forming rebel cells. A few of these cells were peaceful attempts at protesting while a majority of them felt the only way to defeat the emperor would be to blow up his war machine. Ghorman Massacre in 18
BBY led many of the senators to realize that the senate had become powerless and many left and formed the Alliance to Restore the Republic (Often Referred to as the Rebel Alliance). Realizing their Deceleration of Rebellion they went on to begin forming the small scattered cells into one fighting force capable of bringing a fight to the empire.
The Galactic Civil War
Although the Rebel Alliance was established in 18 BBY it was nearly 18 years before they had their first major victory. Tiny battles were won, Ships were destroyed, stolen or defected from the empire, but whenever the Empire engaged the rebels in a major battle they were simply over matched. Things slowly began turning around the The Battle of Yavin.
Incom, rather than be nationalized by the empire much of their corporation defected, taking with them a new starfighter design, the T-65 X-wing. The X-wing would become the most famous instrument in the Rebel Arsenal when young Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star at Yavin.
Unfortunately the Death Stars defeat at Yavin came too late for Alderaan which was destroyed shortly before. Alderaan would become a war cry for the Rebellion, as word of the Empires acts spread throught the galaxy. They tried to suppress it but in the end countless number of beings, even planets would give their support to the fledgling group, and they finally achieved what they had hoped for, they struck a nerve in the empire, and became a threat.
After Yavin the rebellion was forced to abandon its base on the moon, and go on the run. They would later attempt to build a new base on the frozen world of Hoth, only to have it discovered and shortly thereafter destroyed again. Hoth was considered by most to be a crushing Imperial victory, and indeed they managed to kill many soldiers and capture large numbers of supplies, but they still failed to crush the rebellion or its leaders, and so a few see it as a minor victory for the Rebellion.
Death of the Emperor and the Birth of the New Republic
The Battle of endor (4 ABY) Was an act of a desperate Rebellion. With the losses at Hoth and a growing number of imperial victories it felt as if the rebellion was beginning to stall. Then the emperor gave them their chance. He was constructing a second death star, and would be overseeing the construction himself. Though this would end up being a trap the Rebellion fought hard, and through its heroes defeated the trap, destroyed the death star, and brought about the fragmentation of the empire.
Seeing the Imperials fragmenting and warlords beginning to gobble up systems, the leaders of the Rebel Alliance issued their famous Declaration of a New Republic, the document that formed the New Republic.
Infancy
The Infantile Republic was by no means a clear victor however, they were simply dealing with more factions of smaller sizes. They set their first government up on the Mon Calamari home world of Dac, which had been a supporter of the Rebellion for some time. It would not be until The Capture of Coruscant in 6 ABY that the New Republic was considered ready to take its place as the galactic government, though the Imperial warlords showed no sign of giving up. As with the Old Republic and the Empire, the New Republic quickly established its capital at Coruscant, but their stay was not yet permnament.
Thrawn and the Reborn Emperor
9 ABY saw the return of Thrawn, a previously Unknown and brilliant Grand Admiral who sent the Republic reeling in a series of devastating strikes with fresh resources, later learned to be recovered ships of the Katana fleet and cloned crewmen for his ships. Managing to rally once again the Republic was able to destroy his clones and began to fight him to a standstill, finally winning when his body guard a Noghri killed him after realizing Thrawn was tricking his people into perpetual slavery. With the brilliant tactician dead his forces lost their momentum and were pushed back. Scarcely however had the victory come than a new threat was revealed. The emperor had cloned himself and returned, taking the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker as his apprentice, and prepared to retake his Empire back from the rebels. However Luke was not fully under the Emperors sway and finally in 11 ABY he was finally killed, the last major threat of the Empire. After 8 more years of combat with fractured Imperial cells a treaty was signed, in 19 ABY the New Republic accepted peace with the Imperial Remnant, a tiny shell of its former self in the outer rim.
Route of Ages
Currently the New Republic enjoys a relative peace through its territories. A treaty with the Imperial Remnant was herald to be the end of the Galactic Civil War even though there is still a rogue Warlord or two who resists. With the relative peace efforts have gone into rebuilding the damaged worlds, trying to restore their beauty and economies to the levels they were during the times of the Old republic. Piracy along the borders remain a constant hassle. The Route of Ages, brought the Republic a new ally with the Federation, but unfortunately new threats lurk out there as well, and advocates state that a strong military on the border will keep the core worlds safe.
